Universities UK has reintroduced the latest phase of its #WeAreInternational campaign, aiming to honor the significant contributions made by international students to the nation. Launched over a decade ago, the campaign underwent a revitalization in May 2023, with participation from over 70 institutions. Phase two, initiated on May 1, shifts the spotlight onto the experiences and contributions of international graduates and alumni worldwide, as communicated by UUKi to The PIE.
The campaign’s objective is twofold: to honor the social, civic, and cultural enrichment brought by international students to various locales across the UK and to counteract the declining perception of the UK as a welcoming study destination for prospective international students. UUKi emphasizes that the initiative aims to spotlight the positive impact made by international students within their campuses, communities, and the broader UK landscape, while also articulating their aspirations for the future through a series of films featuring 10 students.
The engagement of universities and international education entities, including Aston University, the University of the West of England, and pathway provider NCUK, underscores the collective commitment to amplifying the international student voice. Andy Howells, Chief Marketing Officer at NCUK, stresses the importance of bridging the perception gap between prospective international students and the enriching realities experienced by those already studying in the UK.
Against a backdrop of political pressures and potential policy changes that could impact the rights of international students in the UK, organizers are determined to position the UK as an inviting destination for global scholars, contrary to any negative narratives. Featured participant Victoria Lay, a music production student at Leeds Beckett University who completed the NCUK International Foundation Year in Peru, highlights her intention to share her acquired knowledge upon returning to Peru, underscoring the transformative potential of international higher education.
Recognizing the adverse effects of the current political climate on the perception of the UK as a welcoming study environment, Howells emphasizes the necessity for the education sector to unite in advocating for the positive impact of international higher education.
Furthermore, institutions like the University of Sheffield have embraced the campaign’s hashtag to spotlight the accomplishments of their own international student cohorts, perpetuating the campaign’s message of inclusivity and appreciation.Top of Form
