Ted Marthakis of Evart High School Teacher Conferred Excellence in Education Award

Ted Marthakis taught mathematics at Evart High School for the past eight years. He has been a Michigan Lottery Excellence in Education award winner. So Marthakis must have done his best to work differently into the lives of the students, providing them with an opportunity of out-of-the-box learning and dedication during their training.

Before entering teaching, Marthakis worked as an electrical engineer. “I wanted to take a step that would improve the lives of others,” he said. “That’s why I chose to become a teacher.” “I had the thought, ‘How wonderful it would be to be the one who encourages students to have faith in themselves and grow as a person as a result of a teacher.” Marthakis said. “It’s still what drives me today.”

In 2014, the Michigan Lottery began the Excellence in Education awards to recognize public school teachers throughout the state. Each week, a single classroom winner is chosen, given a $2,000 cash prize, and has their story highlighted on news pieces that air on lottery media partners, such as major Detroit television stations WXYZ-TV and Grand Rapids’ FOX 17. At the end of the school year, one of the weekly award winners will be chosen as the Educator of the Year and will receive a cash prize for $10,000.

Marthakis has been credited for being able to offer an academic atmosphere in the classrooms where students are urged towards academic success and growth. As a representative of the Michigan Lottery, Michal Shkreli says that after a very successful career as an electrical engineer, Ted Marthakis decided to become a teacher because he wanted to inspire children. He has certainly surpassed all expectations for his students in Evart.

He inspires students into the next generation through innovative teaching and unrelenting dedication. Excellence, dedication, inspiration, leadership, and effectiveness in the school or school district are some of the criteria for judging the nominees. Thus, winning and bagging the award for Marthakis is a truly special feat.
