The S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University is introducing a new master’s degree in music business, building on the success of its renowned undergraduate program in recording and entertainment industries. The program, named after Martin Bandier ’62, a distinguished music publishing executive and University Life Trustee, follows the acclaimed Bandier Program for Recording and Entertainment Industries, which is consistently listed among the top music business programs nationally.
The new Bandier master’s program will mirror the undergraduate program’s key strengths, including hands-on learning, cutting-edge skill development, and access to an extensive network of Bandier and Newhouse alumni. Billboard magazine has consistently included the Bandier program in its rankings of leading music business schools.
Martin Bandier expressed enthusiasm for the expansion, stating, “Our goal at the Bandier program has always been to be the premier music business school, offering the most comprehensive and cutting-edge education while forging top-tier industry connections. With this new master’s program, we’re taking it to the next level, shaping future music leaders who are equipped, connected, and ready to make their mark.”
Set to launch in fall 2025, the master’s program will provide a multidisciplinary education, covering essential aspects of the music industry including rights, royalties, and deal-making across various sectors such as labels, publishing, management, streaming, and live performance. Students will gain expertise in music law, copyright, and modern tools used by leading companies, with an option to spend a semester working in Los Angeles.
Bill Werde, director of the Bandier undergraduate program and former editorial director of Billboard, will oversee the new master’s program. Werde highlighted the program’s potential to provide students with the skills and network needed for successful careers in the music industry.
Newhouse Dean Mark J. Lodato emphasized the program’s value, noting, “This new master’s program presents a fantastic opportunity for graduates to acquire the dynamic skills and hands-on experiences essential for success in the vibrant music business. We are deeply grateful for Marty Bandier’s support and his dedication to enhancing education for aspiring music professionals.”
