Coinciding with Climate Week of New York City, The Columbia Climate School launched its new M.S. Degree program in Climate. This two-year, 50-credit degree will train young and mid-career professionals, as well as prospective academics, to serve as climate leaders at the community, state, national, and international levels. The classes of the first batch are expected to begin in the fall of 2025. 

This new M.S. program widens the school offerings fostering the students in pursuing new emerging opportunities in the climate field. 

Mr Jeffry Shaman, interim dean of the Climate School stated that the new M.S. program is crucial in expanding the educational opportunities as it is taught by several highly qualified climate experts. 

He added saying that the program will equip the world with active, brilliantly trained, interdisciplinary researchers who will boost in expediting the solutions to numerous climate and sustainability challenges. 

This new M.S program enhances the M.A. in Climate and Society graduate program which identifies the effects of climate variability and changes on the society and the environment. 

 Students learn about climate science and social science through classes and research.
According to Jason Smerdon, professor of climate at the Climate School, having well-informed leaders with the necessary training and abilities is crucial for addressing the climate crisis in the workplace. The students will be equipped with deep knowledge crucial in developing impactful leaders in several climate segments. 

What distinguishes Columbia Climate School from other schools is the emphasis on climate in all fields of study. 

Professor Mingfang Ting identified that The Climate School shines brighter due to its genuine focus on climate-centric matters.
