Manitoba Schools and Divisions Implement Measures to Ease Financial Strain on Parents

As the new school year approaches, many Manitoba parents are facing concerns about the rising costs associated with their children’s education. In response, Winnipeg’s largest school division is taking steps to alleviate this financial burden.

Matt Henderson, the superintendent of the division, emphasized the efforts being made to reduce expenses for families. “We’ve tried to reduce the amount of fees that parents have to pay—it’s public school,” Henderson stated in an interview with Global Winnipeg. One significant change is the directive to eliminate fees for field trips, which are considered an essential part of the curriculum. “Not only does this create inequities across the city and the division, but field trips are something that is curriculum-based and educative.”

Additionally, a division-wide nutrition program is being introduced to ensure that students receive necessary meals. Henderson explained that schools in higher-need areas will offer breakfast, lunch, and snack options, while others will provide meals and snacks based on neighborhood demographics. The division is also covering the cost of school supplies, asking parents to pay only a nominal fee.

Henderson highlighted the division’s long-term goal: “Over the next few years, it will really be about, ‘How do we reduce the tendency for school systems to charge parents for things?’ We’re hoping that will mitigate some of the costs our families face.”

Clara Birnie, community dietitian and program grants manager at the Child Nutrition Council of Manitoba, noted a growing demand for school nutrition programs, which are expected to support approximately 60,000 students daily this school year. She emphasized the programs’ value, stating, “These programs really are school-based health promotion, and they have a huge impact. They’re welcomed by families and students alike as a much-needed resource.”
