Background
On the eve of this year’s Learning Places Scotland and EdTech conference at the SEC in Glasgow, Hub Scotland’s national programme has been recognized for its significant contribution to the country’s learning estate, with nearly £5 billion of projects completed, underway, or in development.
The five regional hub companies, collectively known as Hub Scotland, have been praised not only for delivering new school buildings but also for aligning projects with local, regional, and national priorities, including net zero initiatives, placemaking, social impact, and community wealth building.
Among the highlighted initiatives is the North Schools Programme, led by hub North Scotland in partnership with five local authorities, which is delivering eight new and refurbished school projects in a single collaborative programme. Other standout projects include the £112 million Dunfermline Learning Campus, the world’s largest Passivhaus education building, delivered by hub East Central for Fife Council.
Hub South East recently completed the £61 million Peebles High School, while hub West finished phase one of the £34 million Faifley Community Campus, featuring two primary schools, an early learning centre, and community facilities. Hub South West has two flagship projects shortlisted for this year’s Learning Places Scotland awards: Maybole Community Campus (£59 million) and Montgomerie Park Primary School (£21 million), the first Passivhaus school for North Ayrshire Council.
Collectively, the five hub companies have delivered more than £3.2 billion of new and refurbished learning estate, with £607 million under construction and £1.03 billion in development.
Richard Park, CEO of hub North Scotland, highlighted the programme’s broader benefits: “Hub Scotland does more than develop buildings. We create opportunities for economic growth, support policy priorities like net zero and placemaking, and deliver affordable, high-quality learning spaces in partnership with public sector clients.”
The conference, themed ‘Maximising the Learning Experience Across the Learning Estate’, will also feature a keynote by Jenny Gilruth MSP, cabinet secretary for education and skills. Several Hub Scotland projects are in contention for awards, while hub South East is shortlisted for Consultancy of the Year.
