High school students in Alberta will have an expanded array of elective options for the 2024-25 academic year, thanks to the introduction of seven new collegiate programs. This initiative, announced on Tuesday, includes three programs in Calgary, managed by the Calgary Board of Education (CBE), the Calgary Catholic School District (CCSD), and Fusion Collegiate in partnership with the University of Calgary, Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT), Bow Valley College, and Olds College.
These new programs aim to provide students with dual credit courses, allowing them to earn high school and post-secondary credits simultaneously. The focus areas include science, aviation, technology, engineering, agriculture, business, information communications, and trades. The initiative is designed to create clear pathways to higher education and career opportunities.
In Calgary, the CBE has already seen over 190 Grade 10 students enroll in its new Digital Future Pathways program. This program, delivered both in-person and online, is in collaboration with SAIT and offers courses in robotics, animation, and photography, among other subjects. It provides students with a direct pathway to SAIT’s School of Digital Technology. “This blended learning environment will connect students with technology and communication career interests, offering potential pathways into post-secondary education and the workforce,” stated Patricia Bolger, Chair of the Calgary Board of Education.
Calgary Catholic School District will introduce the Our Lady of the Rockies Collegiate school in January 2025. The remaining four new collegiate programs will be established in Calmar, Peace River/Grimshaw, Coleman, and Dunmore.
The expansion follows the opening of five new collegiate schools across Alberta in the past academic year. These include:
Central Alberta Collegiate Institute (CACI) in partnership with Olds College & Red Deer Polytechnic
Building Futures Collegiate School in partnership with Northern Lakes College and Olds College
Southern Alberta Collegiate Institute (SACI) in partnership with Lethbridge College
STAND (ST&), in partnership with Bow Valley College
STEM Collegiate, in partnership with Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT)
Since their introduction in 2021, a total of twelve collegiate schools have been established across Alberta.
