HCI Skills Gateway collaborates with sustainability education leaders Powering Futures

The Housing, Construction, and Infrastructure (HCI) Skills Gateway has entered a strategic partnership with Powering Futures, a leading sustainability education provider, to advance skills for a net-zero workforce under the Schools Challenge Program. This initiative aims to integrate sustainability into construction careers across the Edinburgh and South East Scotland city region.

HCI Skills Gateway, which focuses on creating inclusive career pathways in construction, will collaborate with Powering Futures to embed their curriculum-based program in secondary schools throughout the Edinburgh City Region. Already, 20 schools are participating in this program, which aims to bridge the gap between education and industry, equipping young people with the skills required for future jobs in sustainability.

Participants in the Powering Futures Schools Program will engage in hands-on learning, working on real-world sustainability challenges set by industry partners. This approach is designed to foster innovation, problem-solving, networking, and sustainability skills among students. HCI Gateway’s role includes setting real-life challenges that require innovative and sustainable solutions, further embedding these challenges into the educational framework to systematically create a talent pipeline for businesses focused on sustainability and net-zero goals.

Kirsty Connell-Skinner, Sustainable Construction Partnerships Manager at HCI Skills Gateway, emphasized the significance of this partnership, stating, “Powering Futures plays a crucial role in bridging the gap between students and industry, providing hands-on experience that aligns with the growing demand for skilled workers in Scotland’s construction industry.”

Jennifer Tempany, Co-Founder of Powering Futures, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the importance of equipping young people with essential skills for a sustainable future, adding, “We believe that economic prosperity and sustainability are interconnected, and investing in skills is vital for delivering a net-zero future for Scotland.”

The HCI Skills Gateway is a key part of the Edinburgh and South East Scotland City Region Deal, funded by the UK and Scottish Governments, with a commitment of £6 million over eight years to promote inclusive growth and improve housing, lives, and well-being across the region.
